Mr Darcy Cogs Maketh the Man eBook Joan Wendland
In this clever retelling of Pride & Prejudice from Darcy’s perspective, author Joan Wendland provides some interesting steampunk hypotheses on the nature of Mr. Darcy and of the evolution of polite British society - and masculinity in particular - that Austen pokes at in the original. Faithful to the original plot, Wendland nevertheless manages to provide new and compelling views of well-known story points mixed with humor and a few original moments Austen couldn’t have imagined! Some Austin fans will not appreciate this steampunk world which, it should be said, requires a little suspension of disbelief to enter, but those who can expand their view of the original will not be disappointed by this well-written story which preserves the tone and language of the source work to tell a well-known story in a fresh and fun way.

Mr Darcy Cogs Maketh the Man eBook Joan Wendland Reviews
What a fun read!
I normally like my JAFF with just a twist to make it interesting. So, I wasn't sure I'd like this based on the description. Loved it though. Try it. The surprise at the end is worth it.
I enjoyed the book more than I'd expected. I was skeptical, frankly, but a light hand was used in presenting the story and I was able to relax and immerse myself into the fantasy. I mean, what's not to like about an alternate-reality twist in a story inspired by a work of fiction?
I approve.
Wow, such fun twists to the all but familiar Pride and Prejudice. I actually am not a big fan of this genre but I literally didn't want to put this book down. Thank you Joan, for your slightly slanted view of such a classic.
This was a really fun read from an interesting perspective. I highly recommend you give it a try if you love a good P&P retelling!
What was Mr. Darcy’s opinion of the women in his life? What was his reaction upon hearing Mr. Collins had married one of his Hertfordshire acquaintances? I’ve often wondered at his motivations and the rationale for his actions. In Austen’s hand, Mr. Darcy comes off as stiff and one-dimensional for much of the novel.
Ms. Wendland takes Austen’s work and gives us a Darcy scenario that answers some of these questions. It is through this alternate scenario that we can imagine why Lizzy thinks so little of him. The author’s interpretation of the story also gives us insight into some of the other characters that are party to Darcy’s life outside of Longbourn and Netherfield. I understand their development is helpful in moving the plot along and fleshing out Darcy’s motivation, however, Georgiana was too out-of-character for my tastes.
The author skillfully writes in plausible Edwardian prose, maintaining the cultural structure and subtle humor Austen conveys in her novels. In addition, she adds a quirky take on reality that lends for a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of these human relationships. It is a genuinely fun re-interpretation of an old favorite. Brava!
