What a delightful book. Told in the first person. By a single young man, reflecting on his own private, personal experience of life....At age 25, with a BA already in his pocket, he quits school. Why? Because he's confused, and wants to think things through at the most elemental level.

One of the things I most liked about this treasure is that it is written in the simplest, and most elemental manner, reminding me of a 2nd or 3rd grade reader...The sentences are short. The feelings portrayed are basic.

A philosopher at heart, the young man is looking for and searching for the meaning of it all...Why? Because he feels jumbled and confused. Does he, in the course of his search, find what he sets out to look for...Yes and no.

Yes, because probably without knowing it, he finds simple meaning and simple joy and pleasure in the simplest things of life...the affection of Lisa, his newfound girlfriend, his travel with his brother, his interactions with a small boy, his reflections on books that he's reading...his bike, his ball, his experiences New York City.

No, because it's not clear that he, the protagonist, realizes that he's found what he was looking for...or even that he's found a major part of it....And, so, he keeps on looking...and looking....as if there were some definitive and final answer...

This fine book is fascinating a multiple levels...One level that I particularly enjoyed was his fascination with lists....lists of all sorts of things, lists that add up (sort of), and lists that seem totally disjointed....but, for the most part, all the lists are fun and fascinating...

Naive. Super is a lovely trip, not a heavy read, nor does it try to be profound in any way...But it's simplicity is pure magic, pure pleasure. And, at least for me, it's meaning is found precisely in its simplicity.

three stars because indidnt particularly like the style of writing. it was too choppy and childlike for my taste. but there were some good insights and nice moments in the book.
I don't know why but I love these types of internal monologues. This book was relaxing. It reminds you that we all have the same non-stop conversation with ourselves, constantly observing and judging what is around us.
The main character has all the hallmarks of an angsty young man who doesn't know what his purpose in life should be. He's looking for meaning. He does this through very simple meditative introspections - he writes lists to compare his haves and wants, to determine the best time-wasting past-time, he dwells on what other people in his life are doing - usually quite incorrectly, he reads a book on relativity and tries to relate it to his mundane existence by over-simplifying the concepts. This book is fascinating in its simplicity. It's hilarious by being so dull. The character's irrelevance makes the whole story relevant.
I am loving this book. It is making me laugh and also I am finding the main character endearing and interesting. It's a peculiar style of writing. Fun to hear the character's unique way of perceiving life.
If you liked Catcher in the Rye, this is a great book for you. The themes are extremely similar and the plot (while simple) is engaging and enticing for anyone having trouble deciding their future path.
I bought this book pretty soon after reading a friend’s recommendation. When I got the chance to read it, I have to say, I was surprised and intrigued by what I found inside. It was not what I expected, but I found myself thoroughly curious and giggling at many of the passages. While I don’t think I loved it as much as my friend, I did really enjoy it. I could relate to some of the dilemmas, and was fascinated by some of the methods the narrator chose to sort through his thoughts, feelings, and situations. It’s a little like a quarter-life crisis, and I could understand his frustrations. The simplicity of it all was very well done and enjoyable to read.
There are lots of "diary books" but this book is so different. It's not a diary, it's a life. I've never read anything like it. And it made me happy
