I am usually a sucker for this book's storyline (others have laid it out so I won't) and there were so many interesting obstacles to overcome for both H and h, and yet I barely made it through A Man to Hold on To. There was absolutely no tension between H/h, no emotions that grab the reader and we never really "feel" their feelings for each other -- we're just told about them. As a result it was hard to be invested in their HEA. Things were so drawn out and there was so much inner conversation that I found myself either dozing off or starting to skim. And finally, readers should be told that this book should probably be categorized as an inspirational novel, rather than a romance novel (or perhaps both?) -- it wasn't a problem for me but I can see that some people might want to know that up front.
It may just be me, but I find myself getting fed up with "series" and mainly getting tired of being fed the "setup" for the next book: a third of this book is a set up for the next one in the series. That was a constant irritant. Please make this trend stop!
As a fan of Marilyn Pappano's and of many of her previous books, I hope this was just a blip. I will read other books by this author but not the next one in this series -- it was too irritating to have spent so much time on this book reading about the next one. I am getting off this train now.

Excellent book. After reading the first one in the series, I had to get the second one to see what happened to the characters. Loved it so much, I have since ordered book 3. The characters were developed, and as a military wife, it's nice to read books that are realistic to the military.
Second book in this series and loved it! I love all the characters and she just makes it all real. Some authors characters are flat and cardboard like. Not Marilyns. Of course, they never are. Typically, I don't like stories with kids in them. I just sort of avoid them, but I the kids in this story make it richer. More real.

If you want a real story with a awesome happily ever after, then this is your book. Just remember, once you read one of these books, you will want to read about all the characters.

I can't wait for Jessy's and Dalton's story. D

Glad Therese has her own story. I felt so sorry for her in A Hero to Come Home To. Her military life is shattered when her husband is killed in action. To make matters worse, he leaves her as legal guardian to his two children, even though their mother is still alive. The children object to living with her but don't realize that their mother doesn't want them now because she needs a break. Therese is at the end of her rope trying to be a mother to them but they are rude to her and Abby, the step daughter, even slapped her. Therese looks into giving up legal custody and has spoken to lawyers about this matter, but has not acted on it yet. She gave her word to her husband that she would take care of them and keep them safe. But along the way, she discovers that her husband might not have been faithful when a soldier named Keegan knocks on her door and later brings a little girl with him. Along with this, Catherine, the mother of the kids comes back with legal papers to get custody of only one of the children. The author did a really good job bringing the reader into the lives of military widows. Therese was an exceptional strong woman and I really felt sorry for the life she was leading and the motherhood she didn't ask for. An emotional read, but worth it!
The title question is a major theme of this second book in Marilyn Pappano's Tallgrass series. You find yourself identifying in some way with each character in A Man To Hold On To. The hero and heroine, and their children/stepchildren are all struggling to find their way through secrets, grief, guilt and betrayal. Of course, there are struggles along the way yet, in the end, final decisions are based on love, faith and commitment. You will love Keegan and Therese and their blended family. One of Marilyn's greatest strengths, evident in her decades long writing career, is the ability to draw the reader in as if you are in the midst of the story and know each multidimensional character personally. From book one to this current story, you know and love these people, you feel their angst and you want them to be okay. Marilyn is not one to avoid current, timely real human issues. In this series, the very real experiences of Army wives and widows are dealt with in a poignant, emotional yet pragmatic way. Just as she dealt with breast cancer in the Josh/Tate novels. Marilyn also has the ability to introduce and intertwine story lines in such a way, and with such a flowing, easy read that each character and their stories connect and provide a review of the last story and an anticipation of the next. I can hardly wait for Jessy and Dalton. The books can stand alone very well but you really need to read them all and start at the beginning. I highly recommend this book. Please also read the dedication of each of the Tallgrass novels. You'll see why. Then settle in and be prepared to laugh a little, cry a little and escape for a while. When you are finished check out The Heartbreak Canyon series (my favorite) and the Copper Lake series. I have read for over 40 years and I never miss a Marilyn book or series.
I really enjoy Marilyn Pappano's books, her Tallgrass novels display the depth and compassion of the human spirit. In this loosely bound series Army widows find friendship and companionship as they deal with the tragedy and reality of their men going to war and never returning. Pappano has a real gift for delving into her character's psyche and finding their inner strengths, their frailties and their vulnerabilities. When army Army widow Therese already struggling raising her late husband's son and teenage daughter, finds Keegan Logan on her doorstep with his adorable toddler daughter her life takes a turn she never expected and she is unsure if she has the strength to cope with the change he will bring into her life. This is a story of love, courage and the sheer strength of the human will to not merely survive but to live life to the full. A wonderful book.
